Who is Mr Rascal?
Mr Rascal was invented as a pseudonym for the bleeding soul of Christian Duell. Having moaned the loss of past bands, past acquaintances and past loves, a long and lonely winter ensued during the year of 2006 where emotions subsided into memories and memories into songs.
Toward the end of 2006 Mr Duell emerged from the slumber of bedroom musing as Mr Rascal, armed with a handful of melodies and some stories to tell. From humble beginnings, Mr Rascal has evolved into somewhat of a social meeting place for an ever-expanding vagrant select. Having built a steady repertoire that combines “confessionary gospel” with a “ramshackle barnyard grumble” Mr Rascal has put the strength of time on the road and the spirit of a pool of creative minds to good use.
Over the last 9 months however, Mr Rascal has in one form or another been pre-occupied with the recording of their debut album ‘A Pocketful of Smoke’, due for release on the 7th of July 2008. Drawing on the strength of ideas and layering that comes through collaboration, ‘A Pocketful of Smoke’ features a remarkable range of instruments and sounds ranging from the typical five piece band (of guitar, bass, drums, vocals and keys) to strings, brass, bagpipes, pedal steel guitar and opera singing.
The first single from the album, ‘Let It Roll’ was scattered across the musical world in February 2008. Some people who like to write about music described it as ‘adorable’, ‘remarkable’ and ‘amazing’ while others muttered profanities about it behind its back. Either way, a steady groundswell of anticipation for the album’s release has ensued since the single’s release.
To celebrate the launch of the album the Mr Rascal troupe will gather at one of Brisbane’s finest musical venues the Cremorne Theatre at QPAC on Friday the 11th of July to present a show as ambitious as the making of the album itself. The launch event will bring together the core Mr Rascal band (of guitar, bass, drums, keys and vocals) with a number of special guests (including a brass section, strings, opera singers and a tabala player. Tickets to the album launch will be available from Wednesday the 28th of May, 2008 from www.qtix.com.au.
The launch event will be followed by a string of solo dates in Sydney and Melbourne with fellow Brisbane adventurer Martin McDonald of the Westminsters.
