Minus Penny formed mid year 2006, bringing together a combination of dedication, passion and a broad range of musical influences. These influences come together to give Minus Penny their rock based, pop- punk sound. Over the period of 2006, Minus Penny found themselves competing in many competitions. May 2006 saw them take out “People’s Choice Award” at the Port Douglas battle of the bands. August of that same year had Minus Penny competing in the Far North Queensland High School Battle of the Bands. Minus Penny showed their diverse talent by taking out both the “Best Original” and “Best Cover” trophies. Later in that same year the Cairns Post TimeOUT held an open ages Battle of the Bands to find a opening act for the TimeOUT concert. Minus Penny found themselves among the 10 bands selected from an influx of band entries. On the night, the Minus Penny boys were Highly Commended, placing in the top 3, a result the boys were all very happy with, considering they were the only school age band to be selected. The boys then began the high schools after party circuit and began to grow a solid fan base. 2007 saw the boys recording their first EP in various bedrooms around the house. The release of their debut EP packed the Cairns RSL to the brink, but it was not enough. The boys sold out and then some, with the bouncer having to turn away many groups of disappointed fans. Minus Penny took another step toward their passion for music scoring the support act for Australian band Something With Numbers, on there Goodbye Mickey Finn Tour at Johnno’s Blues Bar in Cairns. 2007 also saw Minus Penny again take out the Far North Queensland Battle of the Bands “Best Original” and later that year the band took out “Best Senior Band” at the Annual North Queensland Battle of the Bands. The final night of 2007 and the first morning of 2008 ensured the band were doing what they loved, playing as the headline act for the New Years eve show to 6,000 punters. The band are taking their biggest step yet by packing up and shipping themselves to Brisbane in February to pursue their musical career.
