A little over 18 months ago, four boys of talent, style and charm by chance formed one of the most anticipated new bands in the country. Loud and sweet at once, it is MERCY ARMS cavalier approach to music that formed the mainstay of the considerable reaction.
Dark, brooding, beautiful and detailed, MERCY ARMS are making music for romantics. There is a contradictory sense of connection, distance, and attraction in the lyrics of vocalist and guitarist Thom. Hurt and heart and noise that move.
His sense of melody and resolution is the counterpoint to the style of guitarist Kirin J Callinan, whose brutal or beautiful soundscapes explore and evolve with each performance. With them goes the metronomic rhythm section of Ash Moss and Julian Sudek, whose driving beats force the body to move and sway, to bend and arc and feel.
Since their meeting of minds, MERCY ARMS have seemingly been coveted and desired from above. They have worked with masters of their genre including the legendary David Sitek from TV On The Radio. They have scored tour slots with such names as The Strokes, The Pixies, Cut Copy, The Horrors, The Editors and played at the prestigious V Festival alongside Jarvis Cocker and The Rapture.
It’s been a considered build for these young musicians, who’ve resisted the temptation to rush. Their utterly complelling debut EP KEPT LOW is being released Sept 1sth on new label Levity. Its documents the first period of the their gestation – the title track ‘Kept Low’ produced by Nick Littlemore and Pete Mayes, the giant march of ‘Shot Right Down’ recorded at home within weeks of the band starting, and ‘Scream’ the most recent arrival with guests backing vocals by Bridezilla’s Holiday Carmen-Sparks.
