What would Janet from Spiderbait getting drunk with The Spazzys at Adalita from Magic Dirt’s house sound like?
Kathematics.
Formed in Melbourne by Kath from the ashes of previous band KTV, Kathematics have been leaving their musical mark on Melbourne since 2003.
Kathematics fourth EP “Splat” is four tracks of dirty, melodic grunge-influenced power-pop. Produced by Brian Canham of Pseudo Echo (The Spazzys, Beki and The Bullets) the EP is released and distributed through Smashed Records.
“Splat” is a Limited Edition EP hand numbered by the band, ensuring every single copy is special.
Kathematics released their third EP/mini album ‘Add It Up’ through Smashed Records in 2006. The band went global with the EP’s release in Japan, Spain, Sweden and New Zealand. Besides Australia, ‘Add it Up’ scored airplay in Spain, Germany, USA, NZ, Japan and Brazil. The band also picked up distribution in the States through Bomp! Records, based in California and did their first tour of Sydney and Adelaide. The 30 second video clip for the title track ‘Add it Up’ was also played on Rage.
Kathematics are also signed to U.K. label Mohican Records who look after the band’s digital interests as they continue to gain momentum O/S with all Kathematics releases available on iTunes in the U.K and Europe.
2005 was an important year for Kathematics as it heralded a new beginning when Kath steered the band back to the 3-piece pop/punk style of her earlier band Kill Krush Destroy, without looking back. To Kath, 2005 is the year Kathematics finally got their act together. This new direction sparked interest from the first Melbourne label that would release Kathematics, Australian Records, who put out the band’s second EP ‘Do The Math’ in October 2005. Without distribution the EP gained great reviews and a successful regional tour of Victoria followed.
The debut Kathematics EP was a self-titled, totally independent release, which surfaced in January 2004, though it was recorded mid-2003. Although the band was still in its infancy and working out its line-up, sound and style, (the debut EP was very different to the Kathematics of today) it still received positive reviews and radio airplay resulting in the disc selling out. A full-house EP Launch at the sadly now defunct Duke of Windsor (the venue that launched Jet and Airbourne) and live appearance on cult TV show Chartbusting 80’s were highlights from those early days.
Both Kath and Kathematics have shared the stage with Sleater Kinney (U.S.) The Spazzys, Mach Pelican, Killing Heidi, Kisschasy, Clare Bowditch, Matt Mavis, Even, Deborah Conway, Vika and Linda, The Vasco Era and The Gingers but be warned, Kathematics catchy tunes will be running around in your head long after their gig is finished and the bar is closed, so you better make sure you take a six pack home!

Seems like the band owners have been pretty boring here, you should get in contact with them and find out why it's empty!
