When people talk about the recent indie-slash-electro crossover movement, there’s one word that never takes long to pop up. Klaxons. All in their early 20s, what the English four-piece lack in experience they make up for with style, energy and more hits than you can shake a (glow)stick at.
The past couple of years have been a rollercoaster ride for Simon Taylor-Davis, James Righton and Jamie Reynolds. After forming in 2005 with drummer Finnigan Kidd (Kidd left the band to focus on Hatcham Social), the band released two singles – _Gravity’s Rainbow (Angular) and Atlantis to Interzone (Merok) – midway through 2006 before dropping the Xan Valleys EP at the end of the year.
In January this year, Klaxons released debut album Myths of the Near Future. With live drummer Steffan Halperin joining on a semi-permanent basis, the newest edition of the band exceeded all expectations as the album entered the UK albums chart at number two. Despite debuting at 16 just a week earlier, lead-off single Golden Skans eventually climbed to number seven on the singles chart, cementing Klaxons’ place at the top of the nu-rave tree.
With that sort of momentum, 2007 is set to be the year of the Klaxon. They’ll feature on All Right Reserved, a track on the forthcoming Chemical Brothers album, and will perform countless festival performances including Roskilde, not one but two sets at Glastonbury and our very own Splendour in the Grass.
