Little Birdy is the pop-rock band fronted by iconic vocalist Katy Steele. Steele is the daughter of Perth blues guru Rick Steele and the younger sister of The Sleepy Jackson mastermind Luke – but contrary to what some may believe, Little Birdy are riding on nobody’s coattails.
The band appeared on the Perth scene in late 2002 and early 2003 when Steele teamed with ex Freud’s Pillow guitarist Simon Leach, Fourth Floor Collapse bassist Scott O’Donoghue (Barney) and drummer Matt Chequer. After impressing audiences on the local scene, they quickly climed the ladder and found themselves supporting the likes of Placebo and playing the last-ever Livid festival on the East Coast.
Their self-titled EP dropped in mid-2003 and made them the hottest property West of the nullarbor. Sharing the stage regularly with bands like Eskimo Joe, The Panics, The Fergusons and End of Fashion, it wasn’t long before a debut album was in the works. In October 2004, BigBigLove hit shelves and took the band into the ARIA albums chart. Soon after, the band recruited Fergus Deasy as utility man (he contributes keys, guitars and backing vocals) and continued to tour on the strength of BigBigLove.
Hollywood, the band’s second album, dropped in 2006 and showed a new side to the band – instead of well-thought pop-rock tracks with a dark edge, the band incorporated synthetic electro-pop sounds into the mix and hit it big with singles Come On Come On and Bodies and performed nationally as part of the 2007 Big Day Out festival.
