The Duke Spirit
The Duke Spirit's Australian tour to promote their sophomore album 'Neptune' has been surrounded by an excitable hype.
We can’t believe it’s actually happening – the mighty Duke Spirit are finally breaking from their relentless UK and US touring to visit their avid fan base down-under.
It’s been on the cards since the release last year of their sophomore LP, the wooing, psych-rocker, Neptune. Accolades have not stopped rolling in for the record, with word of their overseas exploits – from appearances on David Letterman and other US/UK show hosts, to accounts of them gigging the hell out of the album – hitting us in constant waves.
It’s no surprise then to find that they are counted among the globe’s premier live rock acts. In fact, their influence has grown such that a certain British designer named Alexander McQueen has even designed a range for Target (al la Stella McCartney – remember the hordes of clambering fashionistas outside our nation’s shops?) – inspired by The Duke Spirit and the band’s magnetic front woman Liela Moss. That’s not to mention the band having some heavy hitting fans and friends in bands like The Raveonettes, BRMC and beyond.
A ROCK band with all the tempestuous, lyrical smarts of the Velvet Underground – with the icy glare of Nico – The Duke Spirit’s sound is replete with teeth-clenching guitars, powerful drum cascades and brilliant bass lines that build relentless tracks, drenched in subtleties. Known for their aforementioned, electric live show, Liela Moss leads the troupe with her husky voice and trusted tambourine in tow, channeling the energy of a young Rob Tyner from MC5. This is a front-woman to make you giddy.

Sounding like the love-child of PJ Harvey, Karen O (The Yeah Yeah Yeahs) and Abbe May (Perth band The Fuzz), The Duke Spirit's Leila Moss is your quintessential frontwoman. Their sound is so aptly fueled by characterisitics ascended from their contemporaries, it's difficult not to draw comparisons.
