A rose may smell as sweet by any other name, but The Scare wouldn’t quite be The Scare if they weren’t called The Scare. The Birmingham-based, Queensland-born combo are a frightening proposition: frightening in talent, frightening in direction, frightening in disposition, frightening in execution. The Scare are a right horrorshow rockband, wantonly dealing in tolchoking terror and unrestrained hysteria. Their handle’s more function than bandname; more totem than t-shirt logo; more self-fulfilling prophecy than mere fanfaronade
Since relocating to the mother country early in the ought-six, The Scare have been terrifying a barmy army of British believers, their frenzied liveshows causing many a limey hack to go pawing through the thesaurus in search of adjectives. The Daily Star plumped for “deranged”, Disorder dished up “tempestuous”, and the NME, apparently, achieved some sort of state of total tumescence.
So, the coming year will find them hitting the two lane blacktop, from European festivals to heroic homecomings. With the UK press as acolytes, The Scare plan to take their rock-n-roll gospel to heathens the world over, with Reid, ultimately, the ultimate proselytising apostle. “Since the beginning,” he exhorts, “I’ve always felt like we’re the best band in the world.”
